The Reiki Precepts are simple phrases, yet they carry the wisdom of a lifetime.
They are not rules to follow or ideals to perfect. They are gentle invitations — a way of remembering who we are beneath stress, fear, habit, and self-judgment.
Originally shared by Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, the precepts or Gokai, were offered as a daily spiritual practice — a way to live in harmony with ourselves, with others, and with the natural flow of life energy.
They are traditionally recited beginning with the words:
“Just for today…”
A reminder that healing happens in the present moment. Not yesterday. Not someday. Just this breath. Just now.
The Reiki Precepts (one version)
Just for today ~ Do not anger (Can we note the root of our frustration without being consumed by it?) Do not worry (Can we release the anxiety caused by not knowing what will come, and ground ourselves in the moment?) Be grateful (Can we shift our perspective to note the ways abundance is already present in our life?) Be true to your way (Can we tune into our inner wisdom and live with deep integrity?) Be kind to yourself and all living beings (Can we take broader perspective and recognize our interconnectedness, and treat every living thing with respect and compassion?)
These lines form a kind of energetic compass. They gently orient us back to center — back to presence, softness, and inner truth.
They invite us to release what constricts (anger, worry).
To embody what opens (humility, gratitude, kindness).
And to trust the quiet wisdom within ourselves (integrity)
Why the Reiki Precepts Matter
The Reiki Precepts are not about being “perfect” or spiritually enlightened. They are about being human — consciously. They remind us:
To let go of the pain of the past
To soften our grip on the fear of the future
And to return, again and again, to gratitude for this moment
They are a daily practice of nervous system regulation, emotional awareness, self-compassion, and energetic hygiene. In this way, the precepts are not separate from healing —they are the healing.
Weaving the Precepts into Daily Life
The Reiki Precepts are meant to be lived, not memorized. They can be:
Spoken aloud in the morning
Whispered before sleep
Written in a journal
Placed on your altar or mirror
Contemplated while driving, cooking, gardening or snuggling with a beloved
Called upon ahead of a Reiki session
Or simply called to memory when life feels overwhelming
You might pause and ask:
Where am I holding anger in my body?
What am I worrying about that I cannot control?
Am I being kind to myself in this moment?
Am I operating from a place of integrity?
Am I honoring my own truth — or someone else’s expectations?
Each precept becomes a doorway —not into self-criticism, but into self-awareness.
The Reiki Precepts in a Session
In a Reiki session, the precepts form the energetic foundation of the work. They are not imposed — they are held. As energy flows, the body often begins to release what the mind cannot: old emotions, stored tension and traumas, subconscious patterns, unspoken grief, quiet fears.
The precepts guide this process gently:
Anger softens into compassion
worry dissolves into trust
Self-judgment becomes self-acceptance
And the client is supported in reconnecting with their own inner wisdom
Reiki does not “fix” you. It reminds you how to listen to yourself again.
Like stepping into a quiet forest after a long season of noise, Reiki invites you to slow your pace, soften your edges, and notice what has been whispering beneath the surface.
The body begins to speak in sensation. The heart speaks in emotion. The intuition speaks in subtle knowing.
Nothing is forced.
Nothing is rushed.
Nothing is imposed.
Reiki simply creates the space where your own inner wisdom can finally be heard.
Some Different Versions of the Reiki Precepts
There are many beautiful versions of the Reiki Precepts, translated and interpreted across cultures and lineages. Some common variations include:
Traditional Usui version (one translation):
Another modern interpretation:
Each version points to the same truth: presence over perfection. awareness over control. love over fear.
A Few of the Versions I Like to Work With
Below are several versions of the Reiki Precepts that truly resonate with me at this time in my life. I use these daily in my personal life as well as in my professional Reiki practice:
Just for today, do not anger Just for today, do not worry Today I will be humble Today I will listen an be true to my own way Today I will be kind to myself and all living beings
This version feels especially meaningful because it emphasizes something so essential in healing: being true to your own self.
Not someone else’s path.
Not someone else’s timeline.
Not someone else’s definition of wellness.
But your nervous system.
Your intuition.
Your lived experience.
Your authentic wisdom from within.
Healing is not about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering who you already are.
Another version that lives rent free in my heart and mind:
Just for today, I will not anger Just for today, I will not worry Today I will be humble and grateful Today I will operate from a place of integrity Today I will be kind to all living beings, beginning with myself
I like weaving humility into the precept of gratitude.
This is because humility involves releasing the need for control, recognition, and self-importance. It gently dims the light of the ego so we can more clearly see — and receive — the light and gifts of others. This is so important if you are a Reiki practitioner.
Humility is not about shrinking yourself or denying your worth.
It is about softening your grip.
Listening more than asserting.
Creating space for what is beyond your own perspective.
In humility, we become receptive. And in receptivity, healing flows.
A Living Practice
The Reiki Precepts are not a checklist. They are a living relationship.
Some days we embody them easily.
Some days we forget.
Some days we begin again and again.
And that is the practice.
Just for today, we soften.
Just for today, we listen.
Just for today, we choose presence over fear. Kindness over anger.
Just for today we choose to live from a place of Integrity in all we think, say and do.
Today we choose kindness towards all beings. All of life.
And in this moment, that is enough.
